Scrapers & Blades

Choose window scrapers and replacement blades for your job

Start with the surface and the residue you need to remove, then choose a scraper size and handle that suit the work. Match replacement blades to the exact scraper model, and check the glass manufacturer's care instructions before using a blade.

Buying guide: scraper sizes, blade fit, and glass compatibility

What size window scraper should I choose?

Choose a blade width that fits the area you need to reach and leaves room to control the tool around frames. A compact scraper can suit small spots and detail work; a wider scraper covers more area per pass where scraping is permitted. Compare the Ettore 1.5-inch Pocket Scraper, which has a retractable single-edge blade, with the Moerman 6-inch Adjustable Sharkblade. Blade width alone does not establish suitability for the surface.

Will any replacement blade fit my scraper?

Match the scraper's brand, model, blade dimensions, and attachment design. Do not assume two blades are interchangeable because they have the same stated width. The Moerman Sharkblade replacement blades are listed specifically for the Sharkblade: 150 mm long, 0.2 mm thick, and supplied as 20 double-edged blades. Check whether a listing is for a complete scraper, replacement blades, an insert track, or a cover.

Should I choose a fixed or adjustable scraper?

A fixed head keeps one working angle; an adjustable head provides a choice of positions. The Moerman Sharkblade offers five preset angles and a blade lock. Choose a tool you can control comfortably and follow its instructions for securing the head and blade. An adjustable angle does not make a scraper suitable for every surface.

Can I use a scraper on any glass?

No. Check both the glass manufacturer's care instructions and the scraper's restrictions, especially for coated, filmed, treated, or tempered glass. Do not scrape a surface when either manufacturer prohibits it or when compatibility is unclear. A plastic blade is not an automatic guarantee against damage. Where scraping is permitted, follow the specified preparation and test procedure; a small test does not override a manufacturer's restriction. When a scraper is not an option, consider a less aggressive alternative like a white pad, steel wool, or stain remover with abrasive. Confirm that the alternative is permitted for the surface and coating before use.

Can I attach a window scraper to an extension pole?

Use a scraper designed for pole work and confirm the handle connection matches your pole tip and locking system. The Sharkblade listing describes hand and pole use, but that does not establish compatibility with every pole. Review the extension pole buying guide and provide abc with both model names if the connection is unclear. Choose a reach and working position that let you maintain control of the blade.

When should I replace a blade, and how should I store it?

Inspect the blade and holder before use and follow the tool's instructions for changing or reversing the blade. Stop using a damaged blade, one with rust, or one with residue that prevents proper contact. Fit the correct cover or retract the blade before carrying or storage. Keep loose replacement blades protected and dispose of used blades in a suitable sharps container; do not leave exposed edges in a tool bag.

What if ordinary cleaning leaves marks on the glass?

Identify what remains before choosing another treatment. Use a washer and sleeve with a suitable glass cleaner for routine cleaning. Mineral deposits may call for a compatible stain, spot, or deposit remover. A scraper is not a universal substitute for selecting the right cleaning method.

Safety and Liability

Blades are extremely sharp and should be handled with care. Train your crew in proper handling and procedures for treating cuts. In some instances, scrapers can also scratch glass and coatings. Consider having your clients sign a waiver before beginning any construction cleanup or work with a scraper. Learn more from the IWCA guide to non-routine window cleaning.
